When Pantone announced its 2018 color of the year was Ultra Violet, so many thoughts swirled through my head. Some positive, negative, and some indifferent.
Ultra Violet is beautiful– fresh, vibrant, royal, mysterious, modern, eclectic – but when I look at the color through the lens of how this will show up at weddings and events, the word “modest” comes to mind. Ultra violet is both classy & cool… traditional & modern… and because of it’s complexity – a little of this color can go a long way.
I think back to last year, when the 2017 color was announced as “Greenery” and the wedding industry grabbed ahold of this trend and never looked back. The spilling eucalyptus and ferns wrapped up in a bouquet and precisely placed on an arch seemed so natural – almost as if the pantone color was created specifically for the event industry. Ultra Violet, on the other hand, is a bit more complex than Greenery. This color should be carefully thought out and tastefully positioned if you are considering making it part of your color palette. It can absolutely be used and by no means do I want to shy you away from this shade, but my hopes with this post is to provide some direction and inspiration on how to bring a vision to life using Ultra Violet in your color palette.

Jewel Tones
Jewel tones are rich in color and pair well with shades of violet. Add some pops of fuchsia florals if you’re going for a more vibrant aesthetic, or tone it down with bold teals and blues. Ultra violet can be used as part of this jewel tone palette in subtle ways too, like the purple agate escort cards and candle sticks seen below.

Summer Brights
Love color and the bright shades of summer? Ultra violet compliments these vibrant pinks and orange blooms to make for a gorgeous colorful wedding. Keeping the bridesmaids dresses a simple neutral shade will allow the flowers to really pop against that solid background fabric. If you’re wanting to incorporate ultra violet in more areas than just your florals, consider using invitations or place-cards as a medium to do so.

Vintage Violet
This inspiration board is combining multiple shades of violet with light pinks, blues, and neutrals. If you are not digging the saturated ultra violet shade, vintage violet can be your spin on the new trend by toning it down a bit and taking a more traditional route. There is opportunity to pop ultra violet in with florals or introduce it in small ways through fonts, graphic details on stationary, or even jewelry and bouquet ribbon if you wish.
